Just for you: Resources from NFPRHA

By Perdita Henry

TWHC attended the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association’s 2019 National Conference in Washington D.C. last month. While we received an overview of the current litigation related to Title X, heard enlightening presentations from various organizations, and attended fascinating breakout sessions, we also kept an eye peeled for resources that might interest your organization.

Battling rising STD rates

It wasn’t long ago that syphilis was close to elimination and gonorrhea rates had dropped to historic lows. Now the nation is facing the resurgence of syphilis and the threat of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea.

The Centers for Disease Control’s Director of the Division of STD Prevention, Gail Bolan, MD, spoke to conference attendees about the troubling rise of STD rates. In her presentation, Stemming the Tide of STDs in the United States, Bolan shared that, “In 2017, more than 2 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed – and even newborn syphilis cases have more than doubled in recent years.”

As Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness month continues, be sure to visit the CDCs STD Awareness Month page, to access campaign materials like Syphilis Strikes Back or Get Yourself Tested, find information on STD clinical guidance, and more.

Birth Control for All

Beyond the Pill promotes access and equity in women’s contraceptive healthcare. A project of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, the program is made up of “an interdisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians and educators that contribute to science, policy and clinical practice change in the U.S. and globally through research, training and education.”

The organization offers onsite and online training on contraception and several free educational materials to healthcare providers, educational institutions, and other non-profit organizations.

LARC Webinars

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists hosts a free webinar series that’s open to the public. The live and on-demand webinars cover a wide range of topics including Immediate Postpartum LARC, Lessons from the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, Integrating LARC into the Primary Care Setting, and much more.

We hope these resources are helpful to your organization. If you have an upcoming event or resources you would like to share with Coalition members, please contact Perdita Henry at PHenry@TexasWHC.org.
