The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recently released a statement regarding a new study on the maternal death rate in Texas in 2012. After reexamining the data, researchers determined that over half of the previously reported maternal deaths were misclassified due to reporting errors, bringing the number of maternal deaths in Texas in 2012 down from 147 to 56.
Though the number of maternal deaths may not be as high as previously reported, Texas still has a long way to go for improved health outcomes for pregnant women, especially African American women who are still at a greater risk of maternal death when compared to other groups. The TWHC will continue to monitor developments and keep members updated on relevant health outcomes for women in Texas.
